Who Is God Really?

Understanding God’s Character Beyond Clichés

When you hear the word God, what comes to mind?

For some, He feels distant.
For others, harsh.
For many, vague—loving but undefined.

But if our picture of God is shaped more by culture, wounds, or clichés than by Scripture, our faith will feel unstable. Because we cannot trust a God we do not truly know.

So who is God—really?

God Is Not a Projection

The Bible does not begin by explaining God. It declares Him:

| “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1

God is not created. He is not evolving. He is not adapting to modern sensibilities. When Moses asked God His name, God answered:

| “I AM WHO I AM.” — Exodus 3:14

God is self-existent, eternal, and unchanging. He does not depend on us. He is not fragile. He does not need to be defended or reshaped. He simply is.

And that is deeply stabilizing.

God Is Holy — and That Is Good News

When we hear that God is holy, we sometimes imagine distance or severity. But holiness means moral perfection, purity, and complete goodness.

In Isaiah’s vision, the angels cry:

| “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty.” — Isaiah 6:3

God’s holiness does not make Him cruel. It makes Him trustworthy. He cannot be corrupted. He cannot lie. He cannot act unjustly.

Holiness means His love is not sentimental or shifting. It is clean, powerful, and righteous.

God Is Love — But Not Passive

Scripture tells us plainly:

| “God is love.” — 1 John 4:8

But biblical love is not indulgence. It is sacrificial. It confronts sin because sin destroys. It disciplines because discipline restores.

The clearest picture of God’s love is found in Jesus.

| “God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8

At the cross, we see that God is both just and merciful. Sin is taken seriously. And sinners are deeply loved.

Jesus Reveals the Father

If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.

| “Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father.” — John 14:9

Jesus touches the unclean. He weeps with the grieving. He speaks truth boldly. He forgives generously. He lays down His life willingly.

God is not colder than Jesus.
He is not harsher than Jesus.
He is exactly like Jesus.

The Unshakable Truth

God is:

  • Eternal and unchanging

  • Holy and good

  • Just and merciful

  • Powerful and near

He is not a cliché.
He is not a distant force.
He is the living, personal, faithful God who invites us to know Him.

And when we begin to understand who He truly is, our faith becomes steady.

Because when everything else shakes,
the character of God does not.
